News - UQ graduate wins 2004 Rhodes Scholarship

Bachelor of Arts/Law graduate Andrew Stumer has continued a fine tradition amongst BEL Faculty graduates by being chosen as the 2004 Queensland Rhodes Scholar.

Mr Stumer who graduated in May 2002, joins recent BEL graduates Kateena O'Gorman and Ben Juratowich as a recipient of the prestigious scholarship.

The 24-year-old will head to the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom to take up the scholarship.

"I'm hoping to study for a research degree at Oxford with a focus on international law," a delighted Mr Stumer told UQ News Online.

Mr Stumer, a University Medal winner in Law, has an outstanding academic record that includes several Dean's Commendations for High Achievement.

In 1998 he was awarded the Katherine McGregor Prize for Introductory Latin or Greek.

He is an active member of the Red Cross and is a volunteer organiser in the Burleigh Holiday Program.

Ms O'Gorman, who graduated from UQ with a Bachelor of Laws with first class honours in May 2003, was the 2003 Queensland Rhodes Scholar and is currently studying for her doctorate at Oxford, drawing on her particular interests in corporations law and international human rights law.

Mr Juratowich another graduate of the T C Beirne School of Law is also at Oxford pursuing his interest in public law.

Nine Rhodes Scholarships are awarded each year - one for each State and three for Australia-at-large - and candidates are judged according to a strict set of qualities set out by the late Cecil Rhodes who founded the scholarship in 1902.

The qualities include academic and intellectual excellence, integrity of character, respect for fellow beings and a capacity for leadership.

Sporting prowess is an advantage however not a necessity.
