Leading UQ research economist, Professor John Quiggin, added yet another feather to his academic cap with the announcement that he has been elected a Fellow of one of America's most prestigious economics associations.
Professor John Foster, Head of UQ's School of Economics, said that Professor Quiggin's election as a Fellow of the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) was not only a rare feat for an Australian but an indication of Professor Quiggin's international renown.
"Professor Quiggin's election by the AAEA is a measure of his very high international standing and this, of course, further enhances the international reputation of the School of Economics in the field of resource economics," Professor Foster said.
Professor Quiggin is only the second Australian to be elected a Fellow of the AAEA.
The honor of Fellow of the AAEA is conferred on members of the association who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to the profession. Professor Quiggin said that he believed the award was the culmination of a decade of work both in Australia and the United States that are finally coming to a head.
"It's really a matter of a bunch of things coming together," said Professor Quiggin.
"I have been working away at a few things over the past 10 years or so and I am getting recognition now."
Earlier this year Professor Quiggin was awarded a five-year, million dollar Federation Fellowship - under the Commonwealth Government's Backing Australia's Ability plan - for his research examining the economic and environmental issues surrounding the sustainability of the Murray-Darling basin.
Professor Quiggin accepted his Fellowship at a ceremony at the annual AAEA meeting held in Montreal in July.
The AAEA is a professional association dedicated to enhancing the skills, knowledge and professional contribution of those economists who help society to solve problems related to agriculture, food, resources, and economic development.
Professor Quiggin is based in the BEL Faculty's School of Economics but is also affiliated with UQ's School of Political Science and International Studies. In addition to being a much-published research scholar, Professor Quiggin has also been published in some of Australia's leading newspapers.
